Fishing is a secondary profession, so every character can learn it next to two main professions, like Cooking and First Aid. It gives no Legacy Points, but it feeds Cooking and now makes three camp objects.
Learn Fishing from a Fishing trainer (every capital has one) and buy a Fishing Pole from the fishing supplies vendor nearby.
Nothing escapes from skill 25
Nothing escapes from skill 75
Start in your home zone, then move one ring out.
Train Journeyman Fishing at a Fishing trainer to raise the cap to 150.
Nothing escapes from skill 150
These are the first contested zones, so watch out on PvP realms.
Buy the book Expert Fishing: The Bass and You from Old Man Heming in Booty Bay, Stranglethorn Vale. It needs level 20 and Fishing 125.
Nothing escapes from skill 225
Stranglethorn is a good base: you fish there while you pick up the book.
Do Nat Pagle's quest Nat Pagle, Angler Extreme in Dustwallow Marsh (level 35): catch four special fish in Swamp of Sorrows, Desolace, Feralas and Stranglethorn Vale. It teaches Artisan Fishing.
Nothing escapes from skill 300
The quest takes you through Swamp of Sorrows, Desolace, Feralas and Stranglethorn: good water for this whole range.
Skill 300 is the cap, but fishing poles and lures add to your skill, and the hardest waters need 425 to never lose a fish.
